Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
