Pentagon Investigation Concludes Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Messaging App Conversation.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense review has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by disclosing secret information in a private Signal group, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Event

The online conversation in question included particulars about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the group reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Potential Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the lives of US troops if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

However, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he formally exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or compromised the operation. He further stated that he had the right to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be released later this week.
