Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
